Abia State Intensifies Transport Safety Advocacy with Operator Training
The Abia State Government has renewed its commitment to developing a safe and efficient transportation network, emphasizing the need for robust collaboration between transport operators, unions, and regulatory bodies to achieve the objectives of the New Abia agenda.
Speaking at a one-day training seminar organized by the Abia State Tricycle Operators Union (ASTOPU) in Aba, the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport, Associate Professor Obioma Reuben Nwogbe, called on tricycle operators to serve as safety ambassadors. He stressed that strict adherence to traffic regulations and safe driving practices would significantly reduce road crashes and elevate public confidence in the sector.
The training curriculum covered defensive driving, security awareness, vehicle maintenance, and financial management. Ukaegbu noted that the initiative was designed to enhance the professional competence of operators and instill positive behavioral changes.
Security and regulatory agencies reinforced the message. The Divisional Police Officer of Abayi Division, Mr. Okereke Ogbonnaya Amos, recommended that such programmes be held regularly and urged operators to collaborate with security agencies to combat crime. Meanwhile, the Assistant Commander of Narcotics at the NDLEA, Frank Nwaohamuo, warned against drug abuse, stating that stimulants impair judgment and significantly increase accident risks. FRSC Unit Commander Uduma Uduma reiterated the need for strict traffic rule compliance and proper vehicle maintenance.
ASTOPU Chairman Comrade Victor Azubuike expressed optimism about the training’s impact on operator conduct. Participants commended Governor Alex Otti for his administration’s focus on road infrastructure and lauded the union for the transformative initiative. The event featured lectures, interactive discussions, and sessions on defensive driving, traffic regulations, and passenger safety.
