Alkali steps down as transportation minister to run for Gombe governor
Saidu Alkali has formally resigned as Minister of Transportation to contest the governorship of Gombe State in 2027, making him one of the first cabinet members to act on President Bola Tinubu’s directive requiring political appointees with electoral ambitions to resign by March 31.
His Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Umar Jibril, confirmed the resignation on Tuesday, adding that the President had accepted it and thanked Alkali for his service.
In his resignation letter, Alkali expressed appreciation to the President for the opportunity to serve and noted achievements recorded in the transportation sector during his tenure.
Alkali was appointed to head the transportation ministry on August 16, 2023, following a cabinet reshuffle. Before his ministerial role, he represented Gombe North in the Senate for three terms.
