Borno Government Rolls Out 20 Electric Buses to Ease Fuel Price Burden
The Borno State Government has deployed 20 electric buses for public transportation as part of efforts to cushion the impact of rising petrol prices on residents.
The initiative was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by Dauda Illiya, spokesperson for Governor Babagana Zulum. He said the deployment is part of a larger intervention first launched by President Bola Tinubu on December 20, 2025, which included 3,000 electric bicycles, 500 electric tricycles, and 100 electric vehicles to enhance transport services across the state.
According to the statement, the rollout began on April 3 and comprises 17 buses with 49-seat capacity, two 37-seaters, and one 28-seater. The buses are currently operating on major routes within the Maiduguri metropolis and surrounding areas to reduce commuting difficulties.
Illiya noted that the fully air-conditioned, energy-efficient buses can travel over 400 kilometres on a single charge. To support the fleet, the governor has established what is described as the country’s largest electric vehicle charging terminal, capable of charging up to 50 vehicles at once.
Governor Zulum has also directed the Borno Express Transport Service to charge a subsidised fare of just N50 per trip, protecting residents from soaring fuel costs.
Illiya said the initiative is already showing positive results, with reduced congestion and improved access to affordable transport. Commuters have praised the move as timely and impactful.
The electric bus deployment is part of the state government’s broader strategy to promote green energy, modernise public transport, and provide relief to vulnerable citizens.
