Dangote Transport launches live driver monitoring hub

Dangote Transport has opened a Driver Monitoring Control Room at its Ibese base in Ogun State, allowing the company to track driver behaviour in real time across its nationwide fleet.

The facility, recently shown to journalists, enables managers to monitor drivers while they are on the road and detect dangerous behaviour early enough to intervene.

David Idiege, Head of Operations at Dangote Transport, Ibese, described the control room as one of the company’s newest safety tools. He said it is designed to reduce accidents, improve efficiency, and protect drivers and other road users.

“We are always looking for better ways to strengthen safety across our transport operations. The Driver Monitoring Control Room is another major step in ensuring that every journey is handled safely and responsibly,” Idiege said.

He added that safety remains central to managing the company’s large truck fleet, with continued investment in technology, systems and training.

Dangote Transport already uses speed limiters, vehicle immobilisers, speed booster controls, facial recognition, journey management protocols, mandatory drug and alcohol testing, compulsory rest periods, periodic recertification and regular training.

“Our approach is holistic. Technology alone is not enough. We combine it with strict procedures, driver welfare programmes, competency checks, recertification and continuous training so that our drivers remain professional and safety-conscious,” Idiege said.

On driver fatigue, he said mandatory rest schedules are enforced to keep drivers alert.

“We do not encourage driver fatigue. Every driver must follow journey management procedures and rest schedules. Alert, healthy drivers make safer decisions on the road,” he said.

Ifeanyi Ezeala, Head of Transport Control, said onboard cameras have been installed across thousands of Dangote trucks with the support of technology partner Nova Tracks. The system provides live feeds and alerts, giving managers a clear view of driver conduct and allowing quick responses to potential safety threats.

Ezeala stressed that the technology is meant to support drivers, not intimidate them, describing the approach as preventive rather than punitive.

“The system lets us monitor driver activity while trips are under way. The cameras provide live feeds and alerts that help us detect unsafe behaviour and act immediately,” he said.

“Our goal is prevention, not punishment. We want to identify risks before they turn into incidents. With real-time visibility, we can contact drivers, offer guidance and encourage safer driving.”

He added that the system also strengthens fleet management by supplying operational data for better decision-making.

“The transport industry is changing quickly, and technology now plays a key role in fleet safety. By integrating advanced monitoring, we are creating a safer environment for our drivers and everyone on the road,” Ezeala said.

The control room is the latest in a series of Dangote Transport investments aimed at reducing accident risks, improving driver performance and raising operational standards.
