"I Am One of You" – Tinubu Campaign Coordinator Tells Transporters as FCT Outreach Begins

There were emotional moments at Jabi Park on Tuesday as Prince Segun Obayendo, National Coordinator of Transporters for Tinubu 2027, told a gathering of transport workers that he once drove a cab and understands their struggles firsthand.

Obayendo was speaking at the ongoing Drivers' Care Initiative, a week-long programme running from 26 February to 6 March 2026 across FCT motor parks. The outreach offers free eye tests, drug abuse sensitisation, and soft loan access through the Transporters Cooperative Society.

"I was beaten by police, by VIO, by FRSC. I know what you go through. I am one of you," Obayendo told the crowd, drawing cheers from union members.

The session at Jabi Park was specifically convened for members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), following last Thursday's flag-off for RTEAN and NARTO members at the same venue.

FCT Mandate Secretary for Transportation, Barrister Elechi Chinedum, declared the programme open, describing transporters as critical to national development. He urged drivers to take advantage of the free eye tests and shun drugs and alcohol.

"Keep the driver safe. If you need glasses, get them. Stay away from alcohol and drugs. If you drink, don't drive," Chinedum warned.

He also highlighted ongoing infrastructure upgrades, including modern bus terminals in Mabushi, Kugbo, and the Central Area, stressing that the government is committed to improving conditions for transporters.

NURTW FCT Chairman, Prince Dauda Abdulakadir, expressed appreciation to the organisers for bringing the initiative to the grassroots and encouraged members to remain united ahead of the 2027 elections.

Stakeholder Mr. Femi Aderemi described the initiative as timely, noting that transporters are the economic lifeline of the country. Other speakers included NURTW Trustee Mr. Afolabi and FCT Assistant Secretary Isiaka Abdullahi, who traced the programme's origins to the union's constitutional provisions for members' welfare.

The outreach continues across various parks in the FCT until 6 March, with plans for similar programmes nationwide.
