IATA and ICAO Join Forces to Put SAF Transparency at the Heart of Aviation’s Net-Zero Future
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) have agreed to strengthen their collaboration on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) during ICAO’s Aviation Climate Week. The enhanced partnership aims to boost transparency and integrity in tracking emissions reductions and to accelerate both the development and deployment of SAF.
By fostering close cooperation between industry and states, supported by robust systems and high-quality data, the two organizations seek to enable credible and transparent monitoring of cleaner aviation energy sources and their contribution to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. This effort aligns with the respective climate ambitions and commitments of both IATA and ICAO.
As part of the initiative, they will explore how SAF registries and the data they generate can support the implementation of ICAO’s Long-Term Aspirational Goal (LTAG) Monitoring and Reporting methodology, as well as fuel accounting frameworks for international aviation.
ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar emphasized the significance of the collaboration, while IATA Director General Willie Walsh stated: “Credible tracking is necessary to know the emissions reductions delivered by SAF. The data collected by the CADO SAF Registry, among others, has the potential to meet this need. By working with ICAO to strengthen how progress on SAF use is measured and reported, we can accelerate deployment, build trust across stakeholders, and put aviation on track for net zero by 2050. This will set a great example for individual states to work with industry to make the most of the SAF data that is being accumulated.”
