Lagos records 737,340 traffic violations in 2025, set to introduce state driver’s licence
The Lagos State Government has captured 737,340 traffic violations in 2025 through its Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera network, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed on Tuesday.
Speaking at the 2025 ministerial press briefing marking the third anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term, Osiyemi said the figure reflects the state’s deepening deployment of intelligent traffic management and digital surveillance technology to strengthen road safety and enforcement.
The commissioner also announced that Lagos will, within the next few weeks, launch a state-issued driver’s licence to operate alongside the existing federal licence under a collaborative framework with federal authorities. Motorists will be able to choose between the federal driver’s licence and the new Lagos State licence, a move Osiyemi said is designed to improve processing efficiency, cut delays, and enhance compliance and safety on the state’s roads.
He noted that the state, in partnership with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps, processed 27,067 fresh driver’s licence applications and renewed 29,810 licences during the review period, bringing the total number of driver’s licences processed to 56,877. An additional 1,158 International Driving Permits were issued.
Osiyemi explained that the planned state licence would support the government’s wider transportation reform agenda, particularly in digital enforcement, vehicle monitoring and regulatory compliance.
On vehicle safety, the commissioner said the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service had ramped up enforcement of the “No Vehicle Inspection, No Roadworthiness Certificate” policy through technology-driven operations. He disclosed that 1,114,080 roadworthiness certificates were issued over the period under review, signalling increased compliance with vehicle safety regulations across the state.
