LAMATA Boosts Blue Line Rail Services to 94 Daily Trips, Introduces 6 a.m. Start
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has raised the number of daily train trips on the Blue Line Rail from 72 to 94, a 30 percent increase that took immediate effect and is designed to cut waiting times, ease overcrowding, and offer commuters greater flexibility.
As part of the revised schedule, the first train of the day will now depart at 6:00 a.m., allowing the rail system to serve a larger share of early-morning peak travellers. The move represents one of the most significant service expansions since the line commenced commercial operations and reflects the steady growth in passenger demand along the corridor.
In a statement on the expansion, LAMATA said the additional trips would significantly improve the commuter experience, reducing station congestion and providing more reliable travel windows for residents who depend on the rail system for their daily movement. The agency noted that the adjustment was driven by rising patronage and the need to match service frequency with the pace of demand.
The 27-kilometre Blue Line, which runs from Marina on Lagos Island to Mile 2 on the mainland, has become a critical artery in the state’s integrated transport network. Since its launch, ridership figures have climbed steadily, reinforcing the government’s argument that rail infrastructure is central to solving the chronic traffic gridlock that defines daily life in Africa’s largest megacity.
The expanded 94-trip schedule, combined with the earlier start time, is expected to absorb more passengers during the morning and evening rush hours and make the rail option more attractive to residents who previously hesitated due to long waiting times. LAMATA has not yet indicated whether further frequency increases will follow as the Blue Line’s ridership continues to grow.
