NCAA Backs Univasa eSIM Service to Ease Connectivity for Nigerian Travellers

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has endorsed a new eSIM solution from Univasa Nigeria Limited, describing it as a practical response to the connectivity difficulties many Nigerians face when travelling abroad.

Mr. Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, said the regulator’s support followed a careful review of the service and direct feedback from users.

“Nigerian passengers have struggled for too long with internet access at airports and overseas. Many spend heavily just to stay connected,” Achimugu said. “We saw a clear problem, and this is part of our effort to solve it.”

He added that the move also reflects the Aviation Minister’s commitment to supporting indigenous businesses, noting that Univasa is a Nigerian-owned company delivering a service that meets global standards.

Univasa’s Managing Director, Dr. Ben Adeniyi, explained that the company offers both eSIM and physical SIM options to accommodate different devices. The physical SIM, known as P-SIM, serves travellers whose phones do not support eSIM technology.

The service currently covers more than 150 countries and over 200 destinations, with bulk data purchasing helping the company keep prices competitive.

“Staying connected when you land should not be a luxury. Univasa removes the reliance on airport Wi-Fi and expensive roaming,” Adeniyi said.

Mrs. Ifueko Abdulmalik, Senior Special Assistant to the NCAA Director General, said the endorsement aligns with the regulator’s focus on improving passenger experience.

“If an initiative makes travel easier and more comfortable for passengers, we will support it,” she said.

Engr. Halimat Adediran, Vice President of the Nigeria Society of Engineers and a current user of the service, highlighted its ability to switch automatically between networks to maintain connection.

The NCAA’s endorsement signals a growing shift towards passenger-focused innovation in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
