NCAA: EgyptAir Boarding Denial Stemmed From Visa Technicality, Not Discrimination

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has stated that preliminary findings indicate a recent boarding denial involving EgyptAir and a Nigerian passenger was likely triggered by visa documentation issues rather than discriminatory conduct.

NCAA spokesperson Mike Achimugu provided the update Sunday via his official X account, clarifying earlier information he had shared about the incident. He noted that the video posted by the passenger, identified as Ms. Dara, was recorded two days ago and not last year as initially believed. The timing discrepancy, he explained, accounted for the absence of a visible dispute record at the airport.

Achimugu said he contacted EgyptAir directly for an explanation. According to the airline, the passenger presented a return ticket issued by United Airlines which ordinarily would satisfy boarding requirements. However, EgyptAir maintained that the passenger did not possess a valid United States visa or transit visa for her planned Barcelona–Washington–Lagos routing. The carrier explained that without a US transit visa, it could not board her because she would risk being stranded at Washington Dulles International Airport without legal permission to proceed.

EgyptAir further stated that the passenger requested to speak with the station manager, and the subsequent meeting was described by the airline as calm and professional. "The manager claims to have explained to her that it is better she is not boarded from Nigeria than to be stuck in Barcelona," Achimugu wrote. "According to the manager, there was no rancour, and the passenger did not express any anger." The airline added that it was surprised when the video surfaced online given the cordial nature of the exchange.

Upon further inquiry, Achimugu sought to verify whether the passenger's return ticket was operated by Lufthansa under a codeshare arrangement with United Airlines. Such a routing would have connected Lagos via Frankfurt, bypassing the United States entirely and eliminating the visa requirement. United Airlines confirmed that the determination depends on whether the ticket was booked as a codeshare flight with partner airline Lufthansa.

Achimugu stated that the matter would be clarified if Ms. Dara provides a copy of her ticket. He affirmed that the NCAA remains prepared to pursue the case fully in her favour should the airline's account prove inaccurate. He appealed to members of the public who may know her to encourage her to come forward. "If you know her, kindly have her respond to my message, and we can protect her rights if she proves the airline's perspective to be incorrect," he said.
