NCAA Grants Aerodrome Certification to Enugu International Airport, Restoring Global Compliance Status

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has formally issued an Aerodrome Certification to the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, clearing the facility to operate in full compliance with international safety and operational standards. The certificate was presented to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria on Monday at the NCAA headquarters in Abuja.

Ahmad Abba, NCAA Director of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards, presented the document on behalf of Director-General of Civil Aviation Chris Najomo. He described the certification as a milestone achievement that satisfies the rigorous requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Abba explained that the approval followed a demanding five-phase evaluation covering airport infrastructure, airside and landside operations, safety management systems, emergency preparedness, and personnel training. "This was not a formality. It was a rigorous process," he said. "The certification of Akanu Ibiam International Airport demonstrates that Nigeria is meeting international aviation safety benchmarks."

He commended FAAN for sustained professionalism and cooperation throughout the assessment.

Representing FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku, Director of Commercial and Business Development Adebola Agunbiade called the certification a victory for the nation's aviation sector. She acknowledged the contributions of NCAA officials, FAAN technical teams, and industry stakeholders.

"This certification marks not an end but a new phase of continuous improvement," Agunbiade said. "We are committed to sustaining global standards and enhancing passenger experience across all our airports."

An Aerodrome Certificate serves as an official licence confirming that an airport meets ICAO Annex 14 requirements for aerodrome design, operations, and safety management. Without it, an airport cannot be recognized as compliant with international aviation law.

Enugu airport had been operating without full international status following a period of closure for rehabilitation. The new certification formally restores its credibility with international airlines and aviation bodies, positioning the gateway to attract new international routes.
