Nigeria joins global passport verification network, easing travel checks

The federal government has finished linking its electronic passport system to ICAO's Public Key Directory, a long-awaited move that should clear up the verification delays Nigerians routinely face at international airports.

The Ministry of Interior and the Nigeria Immigration Service handled the technical end, uploading all of the country's digital signing certificates, the CSCAs, into the ICAO database.

What that means for travellers: from now on, border control systems in every ICAO member state can instantly confirm whether a Nigerian passport is real, unaltered, and properly issued. No more manual checks or long holds at immigration counters.

The NIS called this a "chain of trust", a system that works in real time, without human intervention.

The service said the integration boosts both the security and credibility of Nigerian travel documents, and tied it to President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. It also reiterated its goal of making passport clearance smoother for Nigerians abroad.

The ICAO PKD is the central hub where countries swap digital certificates used to authenticate machine-readable passports. With this step, Nigeria now sits in a secure, interoperable network that should shorten queues, tighten border security, and raise the passport's global standing.
