Tinubu Targets Lower Transport Fares From October 1

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced plans to deliver measurable reductions in transportation fares across Nigeria beginning October 1, 2026, as the Federal Government expands the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) and alternative-energy transport.

Tinubu disclosed this in an update on the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme following his August 27 meeting with the governors of the 36 states. An implementation committee has since been established under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, chaired by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

The President said CNG-powered buses have already demonstrated their capacity to lower transportation costs. In Kaduna, he noted, 100 CNG buses provided free transportation on major routes and carried about 3.2 million passengers in their first year, saving commuters more than N3.5 billion.

He also cited other examples. During the initial deployment of CNG buses in Oyo State, the Lagos-Ibadan fare dropped from about N8,000 to N3,200. In Enugu, the rollout of 100 CNG buses reportedly reduced the Enugu-Nsukka fare from N2,500 to N1,500, while alternative-energy transport services in Adamawa cut fares by as much as 50 percent.
